Volkswagen has unveiled the new Polo GTI, which follows the announcement of a facelift for the rest of the Polo range.

It gets a makeover, with new bumpers and lights inspired by the Mk8 Golf. There is also a new light bar in the front grille.

The GTI models are distinguished by larger alloy rims and sportier styling details. There are also sports seats inside.

The powertrain remains the same as that of the older Polo GTI, using a 204bhp 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a seven-speed DSG. Just get the hot hatch from 0 to 62 mph in 6.2 seconds.

The power is slightly up on the Fiesta ST, with 320 Nm against 290 Nm for the Ford. There’s no word on a manual gearbox, however, that might deter even the most assiduous drivers.

Volkswagen has introduced a bunch of new technology on the latest generation of Polo. It is available with the brand’s IQ.Light Matrix LED headlights and Travel Assist, a semi-autonomous driver assistance system that combines lane keeping and adaptive cruise control.

A digital instrument cluster is also more suited as standard on GTI models, along with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes access to VW’s connected services.

Other changes include the introduction of the brand’s new touchscreen air conditioning controls and a revised steering wheel with tactile switches.

Pricing has yet to be announced but is expected to start at around £ 25,000. The car is expected to arrive at dealerships before the end of the year.
